Emulate the Nikon ML-L3 / 4730 remote with a Palm Pilot & OmniRemote
What You Need
-
OmniRemote software for Palm
- The database I created for OmniRemote
-
A Palm Pilot with IrDa or the OmniRemote Module
-
A computer that will syncronise with your Palm Pilot
- Compatible Camera
I have tested
this with OmniRemote 1.17, 2.0.8 and 2.0.8 PRO
WARNING
for current OmniRemote users!
Installing
this database will overwrite any other OmniRemote training information
already on Palm handheld, be sure to backup your database before you
install.
I am currently working on a solution that will add the information to
an existing database.
Allegedly ORDesktop can splice two database file together check it out
http://www.ordesktop.com/
OmniRemote 1.171 is avaliable from Pacific Neo-Tek
for those who can’t use 2.0,
These devices are recommended for use with OmniRemote
1.711:
an OS3.0 Upgrade Card
SE, IIIx, IIIxe, IIIc, V, Vx, VII
Palm VIIx
Edge, Platinum, Prism, Pro, Neo
c3, 50u, 50J
SPT1700-2D
Download both OmniRemote
and the N65 Remote database, when you go to install OmniRemote on your
palm pilot, use the .pdb file from the N65 remote instead of the one
included with OmniRemote, then go into categories and select N65.
There should be a huge button that says "Shutter". Setup your
compatible camera to be triggered by Infrared, point the Palm and tap
the button.
I have added the HEX code for those that were wanting to develop
programs for Pocket PCs and hardware devices.
Please note that all information and the hex
is subject to license restrictions and is COPYLEFT, you may develop
new software and hardware based on this information but you may not
charge for the software and it too must be copylefted.
Adding
Timed Exposure past 1minute
Tested 7-21-2003 23:38(PDT)
Using an N65, F65,
or N75 (May Work With Others)
Put the camera into Manual Focus and Manual Settings
Insert your F stop and focus on your subject
Set your shutter speed to – aka Bulb to do this
move your jod dial to the left until you see the –
Turn on the remote signal detection on the camera (Refer
to your manual)
Setting up OmniRemote for Timed Exposure
Go into OmniRemote, Select the N65 category
Tap the menu and select Advanced>Timers
Press the "New" button
The date should be set already
For time insert a number closest to your time now but at least one minute
away
Mode should be "Single Event"
Button: tap and it will ask you to select which button, Select the shutter
button
Now you can tap "OK"
Now you are set for it to open the shutter now you need it to close.
To do this create another new timer, the only difference is where it says
"Time" set it to when you want the shutter to close.
Take into consideration that the fastest timed exposure you can do is
1 minute, I have yet to test what is the longest, most likely it will
stay open until the batteries in the camera run out of energy.
Now that the palm is programmed, make sure it is pointing in the direction
of the IR reciever, if it won’t trigger it, it won’t work, I am working
on a solution to replace handholding the palm pilot for over 1 minute
so you know it will turn on and off the shutter. Also the reciever on
the camera times out after a minute and shuts off so when you program
your timer make sure you turn on the camera’s reciever close enough to
the time when the palm with tell it to fire.
HELP ME WITH
THIS PROJECT!!!
If anyone has a different
Nikon IrDa device and has captured it’s signal with OmniRemote, please
send me the pdb file so I can add it to the database. This also goes for
Canon users and anyone who has a camera that can be triggered by Infrared.
If you do not have OmniRemote,
but you have a triggering device that isn’t listed here, Contact me so
we can work out a way of adding the device.
I am still working
on a FAQ.
My current configuration:
Palm IIIc with OS 4.1 & OmniRemote 2.08

Oh my god, this is amazing!!! After having my designated “button pusher” back out the night before a group photo I have to be in, I found a great way to re-use an old PDA AND take a great picture! Thank you SO much!
